Insulation Tape vs Labelling Tape
Standard PVC insulation tape is designed to wrap wire joints, terminate cable ends, and bundle conductors — it stretches slightly to conform tightly around irregular surfaces. Labelling or phase-identification tapes, by contrast, are thinner, non-stretching, and intended to mark cables by colour rather than provide an insulating layer. Indoor vs Outdoor Use
Most general-purpose PVC tapes are suited to dry indoor environments. For outdoor or damp locations — such as weatherproof enclosures, garden lighting runs, or external trunking — look for tapes described as having good UV and moisture resistance. Always check the product details for the recommended temperature range; in unheated outbuildings or exposed runs, low-temperature performance matters.
Colour Choices and Common Voltage Applications
Colour coding follows BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) conventions widely used in UK installations:
- Brown — Line (single-phase)
- Blue — Neutral
- Green/Yellow — Earth / CPC
- Black, Grey, Brown — Lines L1, L2, L3 (three-phase)
- Red / Black — Legacy pre-2004 wiring identification
